to lighten the weight of electric guitars

I've a couple fender custom shop instruments that I like alot - sound, vibe and feel - but they are too heavy for my tastes. I bought them on line, something I generally don't do. I've thought about drilling out wood under the pickguard area...

This sounds like a (very) bad idea. It would probably not be a wise move. That said - I'm wondering if anyone has done it and if so, what did you think of the results?

I would say that's a bad idea. Get a better strap.

Very bad idea , the last thing you want to do is drill or cut anything from the guitar

The more mass the more the sustain. Cutting them would also cause tones you may not like. Get a wider strap.

Agreed. Bad idea. Not only could it affect the tone, unless you remove a LOT of wood, you really won't feel much difference.

thanks for "talking me down" ;)

I imagine Dale is right, that it would require *alot* of wood removal to make a noticeable difference.

maybe I'll just accept them, tho' they are overweight... ;)

Sell them, and find guitars that are light enough that you're comfortable with them. Though you could rout away a pound or so under the pickguard and you might find the sound improved (or not, depends), you would destroy the resale value. There are a lot of Fender custom shop guitars that are very light. Just shop around for them.

Get one of these and you may not even notice the guitar.

i did that to a peavey t4 bass years ago. it was a back breaker . it didnt change the sound at all and was better on my back. but bass vs a guitar i think everyone here has steered you in the right direction. go for a lighter wood. i do know that mahogany guitars are very heavy. like that all mahogany telecaster. .

the axes that are on the heavy side are a 65 relic Strat and a relic Jazz Bass. I like them alot. I don't say I couldn't part with them, but I'm not eager to. Just wish they were lighter, that's all. Not a major life issue. I suppose I'll wait and see if something else really grabs me.

You could adopt Russ Ballard's solution when he was with Argent.

JinV - I know very little about Argent or Ballard - and from Wikipedia I couldn't get the reference...

The main Fender(?) guitar that Ballard played during his tenure with Argent had multiple holes drilled right thru the body.

So then what is the reason for "chambered" solidbodies...ie. the Virages and others? Is it about weight, or sound, or both?

As somebody who loves to play Teles (both solid and thinlines), it's both. The weight is important but there's a tone that the thinline gets that the solid can't approach and vice versa.
