Danelectro 12
replacing masonite

Just bought a used but recent model Danelectro 12 with the maple neck/headstock. I am told the material within the outer top and bottom plastic is masonite!?!. Regardless: does anyone know a luthier that could make a swampash body to replace the plastic/masonite (all the parts appear to just screw on to the body anyway). Apart from that, how are the top and bottom plastic covers attached to the main interior bodyshell (glue, etc....??); could I have the plastic pieces removed and have a maple top and bottom attached like Gibson attaches the maple tops to its mahogany LP bodies?

Regardless, the Dano 12 is one hell of a bargain.

Why do all that? The beauty of Danelectros like this are they are made cheap and sound great. I have a Dano DC-12 as well as a Dano Hodad. They are PERFECT just the way they are for what they are. You would be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck.

Put some Pyramid flats on that DC-12. You won't regret it.

In all fairness I did change out the plastic knobs on my Hodad with chrome Telecaster type knobs.

I am embarrassed to admit it, but I do not know what the surfer term "hodad" means. Is it someone who doesn't surf?

I have to agree, Put some flatwounds on it and get a janglebox and you'll have "the sound".

i had one in black. the body is plywood with a masonite top and back masonite is a resin composit. mine sounded great it was nice and light. eastwood makes a guitar or two with that same body solid wood . expensive. the dano was origonally meant to be a poor boys guitar like the ones sears used to sell. the silvertone both of them for some reason became collectable. if you change the wood you will defenitly change the sound the only thing i didnt care for was the width of the neck. thats only because i was used to my previous electric 12 which was a hagstrom solid body with the wide fret board and very thin neck.

The Dano 12 is a great guitar. Just swap the bridge pu with a S.Duncan and you will be fine.
